Music Venue Trust Annual Report 2025: Why Grassroots Venues Need Better Touring Infrastructure

A venue can be open, ready and full of potential — and still be invisible to the artists who need it.

That is the uncomfortable message behind the Music Venue Trust Annual Report 2025. The UK has no shortage of artists, audiences or venues. What is missing is a connected touring infrastructure that helps the right people find one another, plan with confidence and make the numbers work.

The report puts the gap into stark figures:

  • 59.3% of UK grassroots music venues were not included on significant tour routings.

  • 221 UK towns and cities with a grassroots music venue did not receive significant touring artists.

  • The sector was operating on an average 2.5% profit margin, with 53.8% of venues reporting no profit in the last 12 months.

Those numbers are not just a venue problem. They are an infrastructure problem — and a touring problem.

When a venue is missing from the route, everyone loses

Grassroots venues are where artists develop, audiences discover their next favourite act and local music economies get moving. But a venue cannot contribute to a touring circuit if it is difficult to find, its availability is unclear or every booking conversation depends on a chain of disconnected emails, spreadsheets and old contacts.

For artists and their teams, routing a viable tour already means balancing distance, capacity, audience demand, costs, crew, accommodation and dates. For venues, it means trying to signal what they can offer at exactly the moment an artist is planning a route through the area.

When those two sides cannot see one another clearly, good dates disappear. Artists skip towns. Venues miss opportunities. Audiences lose access. The touring circuit becomes narrower — and the financial pressure on the venues that remain becomes heavier.

Better policy and sustained investment are essential. So is better day-to-day infrastructure.

What GIGNITE does for venues

GIGNITE is a live-music platform designed to connect venues, artists, promoters, managers, agents and suppliers in one ecosystem. It gives venues practical tools to be more visible, respond more efficiently and take part in better-connected touring activity.

1. Make your venue easier to discover

A GIGNITE venue profile can bring together the information an artist or promoter needs to assess a date: capacity, venue specifications, technical details, social links, availability and more.

GIGNITE already has thousands of venues in its database, ready to be claimed. Claiming and completing a profile helps turn a venue from a name in a scattered list into a useful, searchable part of the touring network.

2. Put your venue in front of relevant touring activity

GIGNITE is built around practical discovery, not just a static directory. Artists planning gigs and tours can search through an interactive marketplace using location and capacity requirements, while venues can receive geo-matched enquiries through their dashboard.

That creates a more direct route between a venue with a date to fill and an artist actively looking for the right room in the right area. It does not guarantee a booking — it makes the connection possible, visible and easier to act on.

3. Reduce the back-and-forth behind every booking

A venue’s time is valuable. GIGNITE brings the operational detail closer together so offers, messages, availability, agreements and payment steps do not get lost across multiple systems.

Venue workflows include an availability calendar, GIGWRITE messaging, collaborative digital agreements, quotes and invoices through secure transactions, and notifications for enquiries, bookings and sales. The aim is simple: less chasing, fewer duplicated updates and more clarity from first contact to confirmed show.

4. Build better-fit bookings, not just more bookings

The healthiest touring network is not created by filling every date with any available act. It is created by matching the right artist, audience, venue, route and economics.

By connecting venue information with touring activity and demand, GIGNITE is designed to help artists and venue teams make more informed decisions. Better-fit dates can support audience development, stronger local line-ups and more sustainable nights for the venue - while keeping the venue operator in control of the relationship.

5. Turn activity into useful intelligence

Every booking, journey, spend and show creates information that can help the wider ecosystem understand what is happening on the ground. GIGNITE Data Power structures that activity into intelligent metadata around geography, economics, audiences, sustainability and impact.

That matters because the industry cannot fix what it cannot see. The more connected the data becomes, the easier it is to identify underserved towns, understand touring demand and make a stronger case for investment in the places where live music happens.

Infrastructure will not replace the venue - it should strengthen it

GIGNITE cannot solve business rates, property insecurity or the need for long-term public and industry investment. It is not a booking agency, and it is not a venue manager. It is a platform built to remove avoidable friction from the work that venues and artists are already trying to do.

The Music Venue Trust report makes the urgency clear. If more than half of grassroots venues are operating without profit and almost six in ten are missing from significant tour routings, the answer cannot be to accept a smaller touring map as inevitable.

The answer is to build the connections, visibility and intelligence that help more venues participate in the circuit - and help more artists reach the towns and audiences currently being left out.

Is your venue ready to be found?

If you run a grassroots venue, club, bar, academy, university venue or festival space, you can join the GIGNITE ecosystem and make your venue easier for artists and teams to discover.

A stronger touring circuit will not be built by artists alone. It will be built by connecting the venues, people and information that make live music possible.
